Intimate Parenting

The book gathers testimonies of parents and caregivers about the experience of working in a group, combined with professional and research insights on parent-child relationships. Following this experience, parents will learn to see their child in a different light and therapists will learn an effective approach to working with parents.
This is Prof. Shechtman's fourth book, joining her previous books that were also published abroad.
The book offers insights and advice for creating parenting based on intimate relationships. Such parenting begins with empowering the parent, continued with the parent's understanding of his emotional world and its results, with an empathetic, empowering and loving treatment of the child.

"Unlike most parenting books, which contain recipes and prescriptions to 'fix' the child, Prof. Shechtman brings her unique approach, based on focusing on the parent and his intimate relationship with the child as the basis for his growth as a person. With an emphasis on empathy and a humanistic approach, and in combination with an outline for group counseling for embarrassed and stressed parents, the book very successfully teaches how sensitivity, authority and parental support can be combined in order to promote effective parenting."
Prof. Ezi Barak, clinical psychologist, University of Haifa

"This book offers parents a fascinating and strengthening group journey, following which they will see their child and themselves in a more positive light. The therapeutic process is well anchored in literature and seasoned with countless examples, which will allow parents to understand that they are not alone in this story. The therapists are presented with a process description based on knowledge, research and therapeutic tools, by a pioneering author in the field of emotional therapy and groups, which brought the emotional focus to Nitzan."
Dr. Meli Danino, CEO of Nitzan

Treating Child and Adolescent Aggression Through Bibliotherapy

Antisocial acts by children and teens are on the rise – from verbal abuse to physical bullying to cyber-threats to weapons in schools. Strictly punitive responses to aggressive behavior may even escalate a situation, leaving peers, parents, and teachers feeling helpless.

This unique volume conceptualizes aggression as a symptom of underlying behavioral and emotional problems and examines the psychology of perpetrators and the power dynamics that foster intentionally hurtful behavior in young people. It details for readers how bibliotherapy offers relevant, innovative, and flexible treatment – as a standalone intervention or as a preventive method in conjunction with other forms of treatment – and can be implemented with individuals and groups, parents, teachers, and even rivals.

This unique, must-have resource is essential reading for school psychologists, school counselors, social workers, and clinical child psychologists and any allied educational and mental health professionals who work with troubled youth.

Group Counseling and Psychotherapy With Children and Adolescents

Many children and adolescents face developmental or situational difficulties in areas where they live most of their meaningful experiences-at home, at school, and in the community. While adults who struggle with life events and stressors may look to professional help, young individuals are quite alone in coping with these situations. Perhaps unsurprisingly, most children and adolescents typically do not seek such help, and often resist it when offered. Author Zipora Shechtman has written this detailed text advocating group counseling and psychotherapy as a viable means of addressing these issues if we are to ensure the psychological wellness of children in society.
Group Counseling and Psychotherapy With Children and Adolescents is arranged in four parts. Its chapters explore topics including:

  • Who needs group counseling and psychotherapy;

  • Therapeutic factors in children's groups;

  • Activities in the group;

  • Pre-group planning and forming a group; and

  • How to enhance emotional experiencing and group support.

This text is a principal source of information for counseling psychology students, researchers, and practitioners working with young people, in addition to social workers, teachers, and parents.
